Visualising Science
Clear and appealing visualisations of data and information are an excellent way to make science accessible to a wider audience. Illustrations are also an important component within the sciences – for example infographics for posters, in presentations or in publications.
In the seminar „Visualising Science“ we teach basic design principles and methods to present research results in a simpler and more engaging way. Interactive teaching content alternates with compact inputs, practical exercises and question-and-answer sessions. Based on their own research topic, participants work on the outline of an infographic.
The focus of the seminar is on communication with target groups beyond professional colleagues. The visualisation of research data for scientific publications is not part of the seminar. The seminar is not a software training course.
The main topics of the seminar are:
- Properties and effects of good visualisations
- Finding your own topic and developing image ideas
- Structure and design of an infographic
- Basic knowledge of visual design
- Roadmap from the sketch to the finished visualisation
- Tools, tips and tricks for creating infographics
Technical information
The seminar is implemented with the video conferencing software „Zoom“.
If exercises are integrated into the seminar context, they will be carried out as Google Office solutions (e.g. google docs, sheets, slides or google forms). These applications are used within the framework of the GDPR-compliant corporate solution Google G-Suite. Participants do not need their own Google account for this.
To participate in the interactive seminar, participants need a working microphone and camera on their PC/laptop. It is necessary that participants switch on the camera and microphone during the seminar.
Organisational information
The virtual seminar will be held on two consecutive dates. Each session lasts 3.5 hours, including a short break. Generally, the sessions will run from 9:00 to 12:30.
